Introduction
As AI powered search tools become a common way people research companies and services, the signals companies communicate online can influence whether they appear in AI generated answers.
This study highlights patterns observed across industries in how companies communicate those signals. It draws insights from the QuestionFuel AI Visibility Benchmarks, the AI Visibility Index, and applies the QuestionFuel AI Visibility Method.
Methodology
Organizations across 19 industries were evaluated using the QuestionFuel AI Visibility Method, a framework that examines the signal categories AI relies on when interpreting and recommending companies.
The evaluation process involved submitting natural-language questions to AI, observing which companies appeared in the generated answers, and analyzing the digital signals that may have influenced those results.
This study uses qualitative, observational methods. Organizations are assessed using descriptive signal levels rather than assigned numerical scores or rankings. All findings are directional and aren't intended as endorsements or commercial recommendations.
Questions tested
People increasingly ask AI questions when researching companies, services, and providers. The following are examples of the types of questions tested across industries:
HVAC
- "Best HVAC companies in Charlotte"
- "Who should I call for AC repair near me"
Logistics
- "Top logistics providers for mid-size businesses"
- "Best freight brokers for LTL shipping"
Fitness Centers
- "Recommended gyms near me"
- "Best fitness centers with personal training"
Marketing Agencies
- "Marketing agencies that specialize in B2B"
- "Best digital marketing agencies for startups"
Med Spas
- "Best med spas in Atlanta"
- "Who does the best Botox near me"
Home Services
- "Best roofing companies in my area"
- "Who should I hire for a kitchen remodel"
The answers AI generates in response to these questions rely on signals that help them interpret which companies are relevant, credible, and clearly positioned within their categories.
Signals that influence AI visibility
Across the industries studied, several categories of signals consistently influence how AI interprets and references companies. These signal categories are defined in the QuestionFuel AI Visibility Method.
- Entity clarity
- Authority signals
- Structured content
- Topic association
- Brand recognition signals
Organizations that communicate these signals clearly and consistently tend to be easier for AI to interpret when generating answers. The AI Visibility Signals page explains each category in detail.
Observations
Across the industries included in the benchmark research, several consistent patterns have been observed.
Organizations with clearer descriptions of who they are and what they do are easier for AI to interpret.
Companies referenced across multiple trusted sources tend to show stronger authority signals.
Organizations that consistently publish helpful content tend to show stronger topic association signals.
Many companies struggle to clearly communicate their expertise in structured ways that AI can parse.
Directory platforms frequently appear in AI answers when individual company signals are fragmented or unclear.
These observations are directional and may vary by industry, company size, and market context.
Industry examples
The following examples illustrate patterns observed within specific industries. Each industry has a dedicated report available in the AI Visibility Benchmarks library.
Logistics and Freight
Companies with clearly defined service areas, freight specializations, and published case studies tend to appear more consistently in AI answers. Organizations without structured service descriptions are frequently replaced by directory aggregators.
HVAC
Local HVAC companies that maintain consistent NAP citations, publish service-specific content, and earn reviews across multiple platforms show stronger AI visibility signals. Companies with generic descriptions are often skipped in favor of directories.
Fitness Centers
Gyms and fitness studios with clear class descriptions, trainer credentials, and location-specific content are easier for AI to interpret. Chains with franchise-level inconsistencies in descriptions often show fragmented signals.
Marketing Agencies
Agencies that clearly define their specialization, publish thought leadership, and maintain consistent descriptions across platforms tend to be recommended more frequently. Generalist positioning often results in lower AI visibility.
Industries included in the research
The State of AI Visibility study draws insights from benchmark research conducted across the following industries.
Implications
The findings suggest that as AI powered research grows, the signals companies communicate online will increasingly influence whether they appear in AI generated answers.
Organizations that communicate clearer signals may have greater opportunities to appear in AI generated answers. Understanding how these signals are interpreted can help companies identify opportunities to strengthen their digital presence in ways that align with how AI process and reference information.
Companies that have invested in traditional SEO but haven't yet addressed AI visibility may find that competitors who align their signals for AI interpretation are capturing attention in a channel that's growing rapidly.
This study highlights patterns and signals across industries and isn't intended to rank or endorse any organization. All findings are directional observations based on publicly available data.
