Quick answer: You can run a basic AI visibility audit on your AEC firm in under an hour, for free, using ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. This guide walks through the exact query pairs that reveal Silent Exclusion and AI Narrative Drift, the two most common ways AI platforms misrepresent a qualified firm.

    Why run this test yourself

Before paying for anything, you can find out in under an hour whether your firm has a real problem. This is the same core method we used to identify Silent Exclusion and AI Narrative Drift in two real mid-market AEC firms. It won't give you the full diagnostic a structured AI visibility program provides, but it will tell you whether you have a problem worth solving.

    What you'll need

Access to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. Free tiers of each are enough for this test. Have your firm's name, primary service lines, and primary market region ready.

Run every query in an incognito or private browsing window, logged out of any account on each platform. Most AI platforms now use saved chat history, memory, or account-level personalization to shape answers, and that can make your firm look more or less visible than it actually is to a real buyer with no history on that platform. Logged out, in a private window, is the only way to see what a first-time buyer would actually get.

Step 1: Run the generic query test

Generic query test: ask each of the four platforms a "best firm" question a real buyer would ask, naming your service line and region but not your firm.

Examples: "best civil engineering firms in [your state]," "best transportation and CEI firms in [your region]," "best municipal water and wastewater engineering firms near [your metro]."

Run the same phrasing across all four platforms. Note which firms each one names. If your firm doesn't appear in any of the four, that's your first signal.

Step 2: Run the direct query test

Ask the same four platforms about your firm by name: "What does [your firm] do?" or "Tell me about [your firm]."

Read each answer for two things: whether the facts are accurate, and how your firm is framed relative to other firms. Watch specifically for language like "out-of-market," "smaller player," "less established," or "challenger" that has no basis in your firm's actual track record. That framing, appearing without factual support, is Silent Exclusion showing up even when your firm is technically recognized.

Step 3: Compare answers across platforms for drift

Line up all four direct-query answers side by side. Look for:

    • •One platform giving a noticeably thinner or more hedged answer than the other three
    • •Any platform stating a fact about your firm that's simply wrong, such as your headquarters location, size, or service lines
    • •Any platform missing a recent, material change, such as a merger, rebrand, or new service line, that the other three correctly capture

Inconsistency here is AI Narrative Drift. It means the accuracy of what a buyer learns about your firm depends on which platform they happen to ask.

Step 4: Repeat for each service line

Run steps 1 through 3 separately for each distinct service line your firm offers. A firm with both transportation and water/wastewater practices, for example, can show strong AI visibility in one and Silent Exclusion in the other. Testing only your primary service line will miss that.

What to do with your results

If your firm shows up accurately and consistently across all four platforms for every service line, you're in good shape, though it's worth re-running this test periodically since AI platform answers change as they re-index the web.

If you find gaps, the harder part isn't finding the problem, it's fixing it. Closing a Silent Exclusion or Narrative Drift gap means changing what the platforms have to work with: how your firm's credentials, project history, and third-party coverage are structured and where they appear across the web. That's a different, ongoing body of work from a one-time website fix.

QuestionFuel's AI Visibility Scorecard automates this exact test across all four platforms, every service line, and benchmarks your results, so you don't have to run it by hand every month.

    Frequently asked questions

How often should I re-run this test?

Quarterly is a reasonable baseline, since AI platforms re-index frequently and your firm's own web presence changes over time. Firms going through a merger, rebrand, or major project win should test more often during that period.

Do I need to test all four platforms, or is one enough?

All four. Our own findings show firms can be accurately represented on three platforms and badly misrepresented on the fourth. Testing only one platform can give you false confidence.

What if my firm shows up but is described inaccurately?

That's AI Narrative Drift rather than Silent Exclusion, and it calls for a different fix, focused on giving that specific platform better, more current source material to draw from rather than trying to get your firm mentioned more often.

Is this test the same as checking my Google ranking?

No. Google rankings and AI platform answers are generated by different mechanisms and weight different signals. A firm can rank well on Google and still be excluded or misrepresented by AI platforms, and vice versa.
